Safe Hiking from Texas Parks and Wildlife

The Keeper game:

The people and K9s that participate in the search for a missing person use all of their senses to look around and pay attention. It is important to listen to every detail about the person they are looking for and keep their eyes (or nose, in the case of the dogs!) out for clues.

Try this easy game with a group of kids and notice how you use your eyes and ears to "protect" your flag.

One person is chosen as the Keeper. He guards a flag (a bandanna or other flag on the ground). The other players are in a circle around the keeper, and attempt to steal the treasure without being tagged. The Keeper can range as far from the flag as he dares. Once a player is tagged, he is frozen in position until the flag is stolen. (A popular strategy is to sneak up beyond while someone else is distracting him. Of course there is always the mass rush as a last resort. Beware, if the Keeper freezes all the flag robbers, he has the option of leaving them frozen as long as he likes.)
